Change in hose length due to changes in pressure Hose movement and bending Persons fabricating hose assemblies should be trained in the proper use of equipment and materials. Properly assembled hose fittings are vital to the integrity of a hose assembly. Improperly assembled hose fittings can separate from the hose and can cause serious injury or property damage from whipping hose or from fire or explosion of vapor expelled from the hose. The following steps should be taken when fabricating hose assemblies: Component inspection: Prior to assembly, components should be inspected for style, type, cleanliness, loose covers, corrosion, nicks, dents, scores, burrs, sharp edges, size, inside obstructions, visible defects, damage, length, and blisters.

It is important to pay attention to the technical specifications of these hoses, as they are in place to promote safety whenever hydraulic hose assemblies are in use. Hydraulic Hose Injuries Due to their intense pressure, increased temperature and proximity to the assembly operator, hydraulic hoses have the potential to cause some severe personal injury and property damage. Be sure all operators, maintenance personnel and other individuals are trained properly when working with these hose assemblies under pressure.
The most common injuries that can occur with a hydraulic hose are as follows: Fluid Injections: When pressurized fluid escapes, it produces a fine stream of fluid that is forceful enough to penetrate your skin and enter your body. These fluid injections are so dangerous that they can cause tissue damage or even limb loss. Whipping Hoses: If your hose assembly blows apart, your hose fittings can be projected at a high speed leaving the loose hose to thrash or whip around with intense force.
Burns from Conveyed Fluids: If your assembly experiences a leak, the hydraulic fluid that escapes can be hot enough to burn human skin. Static-Electric Discharge: When fluid passes through a hose, it can generate static electricity which in turn causes static-electric discharge. This expulsion can create dangerous sparks which have the potential to ignite fluids in your system or gases in the surrounding atmosphere. Electrical Shock: Be aware of using hoses near any electrical source as most hoses are conductive and can cause electrocution.
Mechanisms Controlled by Fluid Power: Any mechanisms that are solely controlled by fluid power can become dangerous if your hose fails. Hydraulic Hose Assembly When assembling your hydraulic hose system each component should be carefully analyzed.
All mechanisms should be carefully selected in order to meet the system performance and service life requirements all while maintaining a safe assembly to minimize any risks. When selecting your components be sure to consider both internal and external system pressures, temperatures, sizing, the compatibility between your hose material and system fluids and what your environment will be.
Other factors to consider might include suction, permeation, static-electric discharge, unintended uses, specifications and standards, unusual applications, cleanliness, hose fittings, vibration and more. When installing hose assembly in new systems or replacing the assemblies in already existing systems, be sure to take the following steps to ensure your system will work to its best ability.
Do a pre-installation inspection Handle the hose assembly with care during installation Secure and protect the hose assembly from external damage Route the hose away from any obstructions Do not twist the hose Follow the recommended assembly torques.
Do a system checkout. In order to reduce equipment downtime and reduce the risk of injury or damage a maintenance program should be implemented. Be sure to include inspection frequency, function tests and visual inspection of hose, hose fittings and all other components.
In order to guarantee the reliability of your hose assembly, you must be sure that all hose fittings are assembled properly. If a hose fitting separates from the hose it can cause severe damage or serious injury from whipping hose, fire or explosion of the substance that is expelled from the hose. In an effort to avoid any of these, be sure to take the following precautions: Component Inspection: Inspect your components before assembly for style, type, cleanliness, loose covers, corrosion, nicks, dents, scores, burrs, sharp edges, sizes, inside obstructions, visible defects, damage, length and blisters.
Hose Fitting Parts: If you are using hose fittings that are not from the same manufacturer in the same assembly, test the performance of the assembly in accordance with ISO Be sure that your hose and your hose fittings are compatible.
If they are from different manufacturers chances are they are not going to work together without approval from both manufacturers. Additionally, your hose assembly equipment should be from the same manufacturer as well. Safety Equipment: During installation, be sure proper eye protection, respiratory protection and sufficient ventilation is being used. Condition: Be sure that your components are made from hose and hose fittings that are undamaged and unused.
It is also acceptable to use hose fittings that are intended to be reused. Cleanliness: It is typical for hose assemblies to become contaminated during construction. Be sure to clean your hose and hose components. Inspection: Examine your hose assembly for any visible defects after assembly is complete.
Marking: All hose assemblies should be marked in accordance with ISO Be sure that this marking is permanent and will remain legible throughout the life of the assembly.
